Rapid Shallow Breathing Index - RSBI

Formula:

Obtain average tidal volume: Vt = Ve / f RSBI = f / Vt

About:

RSBI ≤ 105 breaths/min/L has been widely accepted by healthcare professionals as a criteria for weaning to extubation. f: Respiratory Rate (breaths/min) Vt: Tidal Volume (Liters) Ve: Minute Volume (Liters)

RSBI Calculation Example:

Ve = 10 L f = 20 breaths/min Vt = Ve / f Vt = 10 L / 20 breaths/min Vt = 0.5 L RSBI = f / Vt RSBI = 20 breaths/min / 0.5 L RSBI = 40 breaths/min/L

How to Calcualte RSBI
